WHY SHOULD I GET A CHILD ID CARD FOR MY CHILD?

Each day over 2,000 children are reported missing in the United States alone!

Often, parents/guardians are too scared or embarrassed to notify authorities right away or too nervous or upset to provide an accurate description of the child that will help authorities locate your child. Education and awareness are the keys to keeping your children safe.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD IS MISSING?

Do not hesitate to report your child if he or she is missing – when a child is missing time is your enemy, the sooner a search is started, the better chance your child will be found quickly. You can always cancel the call if your child is located before the authorities arrive.

If you are in a store or public building notify the management or security department, then immediately notify the local police department.

Provide authorities with your child’s ID card right away. The information on this card will help authorities have an accurate physical description and a current photograph of your child.

Request that your child’s name and identifying information be entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Person File. If a suspect description is available an Amber Alert may be issued.

After you have reported your child missing to law enforcement, call the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children on their toll-free telephone number, 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHILD’S ID CARD BE UPDATED?

It is recommended that your child’s ID card be updated every six months up to age four, then once a year after that. Keep your child’s old ID cards; they are a great way to see how fast they grow!
